EVs, IVs and natures explained for Pokemon Champions

EVs, IVs and natures are where new players lose the most stats without realizing it. Here is the math, the 66 EV cap, and the natures that actually matter.

Every Pokemon's final stats come from four numbers: base stats, IVs, EVs and nature. Base stats are fixed by species, IVs and natures are picked once, and EVs are where you spend most of your tuning budget. Here is how it all fits together in Pokemon Champions.

IVs (Individual Values)

IVs range from 0 to 31 per stat. In Pokemon Champions, the team builder treats every Pokemon as having 31 IVs in all stats by default. There is no breeding grind: you can focus on EVs and nature.

EVs (Effort Values)

EVs are the stat points you assign. In Pokemon Champions, the cap is 66 EVs total per Pokemon, distributed however you like across HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed.

Because the cap is much smaller than the legacy 510 EV system, every point matters. Common spreads:

  • Pure attacker: 33 EVs in your offensive stat (Atk or SpA), 33 in Speed.
  • Bulky attacker: 22 in Atk/SpA, 22 in Speed, 22 in HP.
  • Defensive wall: 33 in HP, 33 split between Defense and Special Defense based on the threats you want to wall.
  • Trick Room sweeper: 33 in Atk/SpA, 33 in HP, 0 in Speed (and 0 IV in Speed).

Natures

A nature multiplies one stat by 1.1 (boosted) and another by 0.9 (lowered). HP is never affected. The five most-used natures cover almost every team:

  • Adamant — +Atk, -SpA. Default for physical attackers that don't need extra Speed.
  • Jolly — +Spe, -SpA. Physical attackers that need to outspeed.
  • Modest — +SpA, -Atk. Default for special attackers.
  • Timid — +Spe, -Atk. Special attackers that need to outspeed.
  • Bold / Calm — +Def or +SpD, -Atk. Defensive walls.

The stat formula

Pokemon Champions uses level 50 as the standard. With 31 IVs and a nature multiplier N (1.0, 1.1 or 0.9):

  • HP: floor(((2·base + 31 + 2·EV) · 50 / 100) + 60)
  • Other stats: floor(floor(((2·base + 31 + 2·EV) · 50 / 100) + 5) · N)

The team builder on Champions Hub does this math for you in real time as you slide EVs around.

Useful speed benchmarks

Aim to hit one of these tiers when investing in Speed:

  • Outspeed neutral-natured base 100s.
  • Outspeed positive-natured base 95s (the "Garchomp tier").
  • Outspeed Choice Scarf base 80 attackers.
  • Outspeed positive-natured base 110s (top offensive tier).
